My Reasons for taking up Cycling and Riding a Bike.

Now before I begin, what I am doing may not work for you, so always consult your doctor, this is just my experience.

Hi, I was one of those guys who exercised and kept my self very fit, martial arts, yoga and a variety of other things. A while back I injured my back and that left me in a very dodgy condition, at the time it looked bad, and many things I was used to doing were gone, and it was possible, I may not have been able to do them again. Cycling may have given me a way back.

Any of you who have had your fifth lumber move and go on a little day out, and push on your spinal column will know the kinds of real life difficulties that causes. For those of you who do not know.

“LOOK AFTER YOUR BACK AND SPINE”

So after about eighteen months of learning to do things again, I felt a lot better, and started to dream again. I also realised that, as walking can be very painful, unless I got rid of my car I would use it.

The opportunity came last month, I went to a local charity shop and got my self a £40, old well used mountain bike. Took the car off the road and began to play, with the bike.

A friend of mine Graham, pottered around on a bike and he suggested I could go for rides with him, so I did. Boy was that an eye opener.

When I got on the bike I realised that as I still have some nerve damage I could not feel certain parts of my body, so when I stopped I fell off. Looked like my balance was out as well.

“heal thy self”
As a therapist I realised that a lot of internal work needed to be done and a lot of reality faced. OK I can do that , so I started on the kind of techniques I have been teaching other to do for the last twenty odd years. Yes, they worked for me as well. So I continued playing and learning.

Graham was very good at helping me to set up the cycle so that it was easer to ride, and over the last few weeks, as I have regained some, well quite a lot of feeling back, and balance things have got better.

The distance has increased as well, from eight miles to 38 miles, and a few 16 milers as well. Graham started to take me round cycle shops as he got bits for his bike, and I was introduced to a whole new world.

I need a good bike. That will come in time as I am working towards it. What has amazed me is how beneficial to my physical, mental and emotional life riding a bike is.

Not only has my balance improved, feeling returning to injured bits of my body, I am in less pain, my spine is becoming stronger and more stable, I have lost weight, my gut muscles are again beginning to show and overall muscle tone is coming back.

Mentally I am sharper and as far as I am concerned, I have began to dream and work towards my goals again. Being out in nature with the wind blowing round what little hair I have is truly wonderful.

Something I never realised is all the people you meet and talk with.

So why did I start riding a bike again, hope.

What has it given me: exercise, fitness, fun, passion, companionship and the drive that I had for a while lost. So.

GET ON A BIKE.
